Chengdu and Chongqing Tour: A Flexible 6-Day Itinerary
A six-day Chengdu and Chongqing tour can combine a panda visit, tea and Sichuan food with Chongqing's river views and layered city streets. The most workable starting point is three nights in Chengdu and two in Chongqing, with arrival on day one and departure on day six. This gives you two main sightseeing days in the first city, a transfer day, and a full day plus a flexible evening in the second.
This is a planning example, not a fixed-price package or a promise of confirmed bookings. Your flight times, preferred direction, panda reservation, walking ability and available trains can change the order. Six calendar days are not six full sightseeing days. If both flights take up most of their respective days, keep the central priorities and remove optional stops rather than compressing everything.

Day Overnight Main plan Flexible element 1 Chengdu Arrival, hotel and a nearby meal A short orientation if energy allows 2 Chengdu Reserved panda visit Tea, a short walk or hotel rest 3 Chengdu City culture and food A museum, park or neighborhood choice 4 Chongqing Intercity transfer and hotel arrival An easy riverside evening 5 Chongqing One additional city area and a meal Liziba, Ciqikou or cultural interests 6 Departure Checkout and onward travel A nearby activity only if timing works The table deliberately leaves open periods. They absorb weather changes, queues, tired children or the wish to linger over lunch. A Chengdu Chongqing tour becomes more personal when those choices reflect your interests. It becomes less enjoyable when every open hour is replaced by another transfer.
Day one: arrive in Chengdu and settle in
Keep the first day centered on arrival, reaching the hotel and getting comfortable. Confirm the actual airport or railway station, the expected transfer arrangements and the hotel's check-in conditions. If your room will not be available immediately, ask about luggage storage or other arrangements in advance. A planned early arrival should not silently become a promise of early room access.
For an early arrival, take a short walk near the hotel, identify a convenient meal option and learn the pickup point for the following day. For a late arrival, make dinner and sleep the priorities. Avoid using a prepaid performance or a difficult reservation as the first evening's anchor. Delays at the start of a trip should not create a chain of missed appointments.
Before sleeping, review the next day's panda booking: attraction name, date, entry session, travelers and required identification. Put essentials where you can find them easily. This small check is more useful than spending the first evening crossing the city to add another sight. Overnight in Chengdu, with the exact hotel and room arrangements confirmed separately.
Chengdu panda base, photographed in 2016. Historical destination image; animal activity varies. Day two: pandas, then time to recover
Build the day around the panda session you have successfully reserved. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding's official ticket page, checked on 27 October 2026, describes real-name reservations and morning or afternoon entry. It also distinguishes the base ticket from Panda Valley access. Confirm the site and rules for each traveler rather than treating all panda outings as interchangeable.
Allow for the journey, entrance procedures and the walking required inside. Animal behavior and viewing conditions vary, so the itinerary does not promise an active panda, a particular individual or a close encounter. Spend time observing at a comfortable pace and follow the venue's visitor instructions. A guide or driver arrangement should specify where assistance begins and ends.
Afterward, choose lunch and a genuine rest period. If the group wants more, add a nearby tea stop or short neighborhood walk. If your booking is for the afternoon, use the morning gently and keep the evening simple. This balance makes a Chengdu Chongqing tour work better for mixed ages than a full attraction program attached to both sides of the panda visit.
Day three: culture, tea and Chengdu food
Use the third day to explore the city beyond the panda outing. Choose a cultural visit or a neighborhood walk according to your interests, then leave room for a park or tea stop. Museum opening days, exhibitions and entry arrangements should be checked before fixing the route. Do not assume that a museum will be available simply because it provides an attractive rain alternative.
Plan one meal as an experience in its own right. You may prefer a guided introduction to Sichuan dishes, a relaxed restaurant meal or a shorter food walk. Confirm what is included, whether dietary needs can be accommodated and how much walking is involved. A vague “food tour” label does not explain the dishes, duration or costs you will encounter.
Keep the evening adaptable and prepare for tomorrow's move. Check the railway booking, station names and hotel departure plan. Pack so that essential documents, medicine and a change of clothes are accessible. If you would rather stay in one city longer, this is the point to reconsider whether a two-city trip is the right use of your available time.
Day four: transfer to Chongqing without rushing
The intercity train is one component of the transfer day. The full journey includes checkout, getting to the correct station, security and boarding procedures, the train itself, leaving the arrival station and reaching your next hotel. Check actual date-specific trains and fares through the official railway service or your confirmed booking channel. This sample does not guarantee a particular travel time, station or departure.
China Railway's English guidance explains real-name ticketing and identification requirements. Ensure passenger details and the document used for travel match the booking. Keep the exact station names visible; a city can have several stations. Ask for any required mobility assistance through the appropriate service channel and confirm its availability before relying on it.
After arriving in Chongqing, settle in before deciding on an evening outing. If timing and energy allow, choose a simple river-view visit with an easy return route. Otherwise, eat near the hotel and leave sightseeing for tomorrow. A Chengdu Chongqing tour should not treat the transfer day as an obligation to fit another full city program around a train.
Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2, photographed in May 2026. Day five: Chongqing's city layers and river setting
Start with one distinct focus beyond the previous evening. Liziba may appeal to travelers interested in transport and urban scenery; Ciqikou may suit those who want a separate neighborhood outing. They are options, not compulsory stops in the same morning. Account for changes of level and actual walking routes when estimating what the group will enjoy.
Give lunch enough space and allow a break before the evening. Hongyadong is a multilevel riverside attraction, not a remote cave excursion. Decide whether you want to explore the complex, view it from outside, or simply spend time near the river. Lighting, weather and crowd arrangements are variable, so there is no guaranteed photograph or fixed viewing moment in this plan.
If hotpot is a priority, discuss broth, ingredients and spice preferences clearly. A divided pot is not an allergen control guarantee. Finish the day at a comfortable hour, especially if departure is early tomorrow. The Chongqing part of a Chengdu Chongqing tour should feel distinct from Chengdu without becoming a test of how many steps you can manage.
Day six: leave a realistic departure buffer
Plan backward from your confirmed flight or train, using the operator's check-in and boarding guidance and a realistic local transfer. Include time to collect luggage and leave the hotel. A morning activity is optional only if it fits safely within that plan; it should not require a long detour or a reservation that competes with departure.
If you have much of the day free, choose something near the hotel or on a sensible route, and confirm luggage arrangements. If your departure is early, a straightforward breakfast and transfer are sufficient. This sample assumes five hotel nights. Additional nights, late checkout and an extra transfer are separate items to discuss rather than automatic inclusions.
Adjust the route for families and slower travel
For young children, make rest, food and bedtime visible in the schedule before adding activities. Choose accommodation with confirmed room and bedding arrangements, and ask about vehicle seating requirements where relevant. In Chongqing, assess each route for steps and crowding rather than relying on a general family-friendly description. A stroller can help in some places and become difficult in others.
For travelers with limited mobility, describe the distances, gradients and assistance you can manage. Ask about the whole sequence from hotel entrance to vehicle, station and attraction. A lift at one location does not establish a step-free day. A slower Chengdu Chongqing tour may replace a neighborhood outing with a convenient cultural stop or an additional night.
If you have seven or eight days, consider adding time where your interests are strongest instead of automatically adding a third city. If you have only four or five days, choosing one city may be more satisfying. Compare our family travel guidance and wider China itinerary choices before deciding.
Weather and food alternatives
Keep one practical indoor option in each city, with its current opening and admission checked. Pair it with a nearby meal or rest stop so the alternative does not require more travel than the original plan. For outdoor evenings, look at the forecast and local conditions on the day. Poor visibility is a reason to change priorities rather than chase a promised skyline photograph.
Food preferences should travel with you between cities. Share a written explanation of allergies or strict requirements and confirm individual dishes with restaurants. Less spicy does not necessarily mean free from allergens or animal ingredients. Familiar meals and simple snacks can remain part of an adventurous trip; nobody needs to order an unfamiliar dish at every sitting.
What to confirm in a tailored proposal
Ask for a clear list of included and excluded services before treating a route as a booking. Identify guide days, working hours and language; vehicle use and pickup points; hotel names, room types and nights; rail class and passenger arrangements; attraction admission; meals; and any optional activities. If a service is only a suggestion, it should remain labeled that way.
China Guide Trip discusses customized arrangements with local partners. A proposed Chengdu Chongqing tour does not imply that every hotel, guide or ticket is already secured. Availability, supplier responsibilities, total price, currency, payment schedule and change or cancellation conditions belong in the specific confirmed proposal and applicable agreement. No response deadline or refund entitlement is promised by this sample.
The planning process begins with your dates and priorities, followed by a suggested route and adjustments. Review the service list and practical arrangements before confirmation. If you prefer independent transport with selected guided visits, say so. The aim is to arrange the support you need, not to assume that every hour must be guided.
Frequently asked questions
Can the itinerary run from Chongqing to Chengdu?
Yes, the direction can be reconsidered around transport and reservations. Rebuild arrival, transfer and departure timing instead of simply reversing the sightseeing list. Confirm the panda date before treating the new order as settled.
Does six days include international flights?
The example begins with arrival in Chengdu and ends with departure from Chongqing. It does not include or promise international flights. Your actual travel schedule determines how much time remains on the first and last days.
Are train tickets and hotels included?
Nothing is automatically included by this sample itinerary. Request the exact services you need and check the written proposal. Train availability, hotel rooms and attraction reservations must be confirmed for your dates.
Can we add a major excursion?
Possibly, but it should replace other activities or extend the trip. Assess the full journey and admission requirements before adding it. Avoid fitting a distant excursion into the same day as an uncertain intercity transfer.
Is this a private tour?
It can be discussed as a private planning request, with the level of guiding and transport adapted to your needs. Confirm each service and its delivery arrangements; the page itself is not a fixed departure or guaranteed booking.
Request your six-day route
Tell us your dates, adult and child numbers, arrival and departure plans, preferred pace, dietary needs and whether you need guides, transport or hotel suggestions. Mention “Chengdu and Chongqing six days” so the request is clear. Do not include passport scans or payment details in an initial inquiry.
