You don't need every Chinese app. Start with the essentials and add local apps only when
they match your travel style.
Step by Step
How to Pay in China
Four things to sort out before you land. The rest you will figure out at the counter.

ESSENTIAL
Alipay支付宝
All-in-one starting point for payments, transit QR codes, ride-hailing and mini-programs — all inside one app.
- English interface available in the international version.
- International cards supported, but subject to issuer, verification and current Alipay policies. Keep a physical card and cash as backup.
- Install and add your payment card before departure while you have reliable internet.

ESSENTIAL
WeChat微信
China's main messaging app — essential for contacting hotels, guides and local businesses. Also supports payments and service mini-programs.
- English interface available. Some mini-programs display Chinese only.
- WeChat Pay availability depends on account eligibility and card issuer. Not every foreign card is supported.
- Install and register before departure. Many hotels and guides communicate through WeChat.

ESSENTIAL
Amap高德地图
Practical navigation for walking, metro, bus and driving. English support is limited — search in Chinese for best results.
- Core navigation has limited English. Detailed place info is primarily in Chinese.
- Save your hotel name and address in Chinese before departure.
- Install ahead of time. Ride-hailing access available where supported.

ESSENTIAL FOR BOOKING
Trip.com
International-friendly platform for booking China trains, hotels, flights, attractions, airport transfers and travel eSIM.
- Fully English. International cards accepted. Add passport details before departure for faster bookings.
- A booking platform — may not always be cheaper than booking directly with the operator.

ESSENTIAL
Translation App
Keep at least one offline-capable translator ready. Recommended: Apple Translate, Microsoft Translator, Google Translate (download Chinese offline), or Pleco for dictionary lookup.
- Download offline Chinese language packs before departure.
- Chinese AI assistants like Doubao can help with screenshots and menus, but treat them as optional supplements — not your only translation tool.
Transportation
Getting Around China
Several transport services are available inside Alipay or WeChat — you may not need
separate apps.
Taxi & Ride-Hailing
DiDi is the major ride-hailing service. It's available as a standalone app or through Alipay/WeChat mini-programs. A separate download is useful for frequent users but not required.
English interface is limited.
High-Speed Rail
Trip.com offers passport-based booking with English support. Railway 12306 is the official China Railway platform — preferred by experienced travelers but less intuitive for first-timers.
Trip.com is a booking platform, not the official China Railway app.
