How to Use WeChat Pay in China with a Foreign Card

Quick answer

Official sources checked on 9 October 2026. This guide covers merchant payments in mainland China using an overseas bank card linked to WeChat.

Yes, visitors can use WeChat Pay, called Weixin Pay in mainland China, with an eligible foreign credit or debit card. You do not need to open a mainland Chinese bank account. Add your card in WeChat, complete any verification requested, then scan a merchant’s payment code or let the cashier scan yours. Shanghai’s official overseas-card guide confirms the foreign-card route.

Start before departure, while you can easily receive messages from your bank. A card appearing in your wallet means it has been added; it does not guarantee that every merchant payment will succeed.

What to have ready

  • Your phone with the latest WeChat app and access to your existing account, or a mobile number for registration.
  • A number that can receive verification texts. Tencent allows registration with an overseas number, so a Chinese +86 number is not a general requirement.
  • Your own eligible credit or debit card and access to any authentication your bank requests.
  • Your valid passport, ready if identity verification is requested.
  • A working internet connection and another way to pay.

Tencent’s registration guidance explains that a simplified card-linking route permits limited spending, while fuller identity verification can unlock higher limits. Do not assume everyone sees the same sequence of screens.

Set up WeChat Pay step by step

1 Sign in to WeChat

Download or update WeChat through your usual official app store. Sign in if you already have an account; otherwise register with your own phone number and complete the checks shown in the app. Keep access to that number during your trip. A travel data connection is only part of the setup if a verification message still needs to reach your normal number.

Account registration and payment activation are separate steps. If registration stops at a security check, follow the official recovery or assistance options shown there. Adding a bank card cannot substitute for resolving an account-access problem.

2 Open Wallet and add your card

The route in Shanghai’s September 2026 instructions is Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards. Open the card section and choose the option to add a card. Labels can differ by language, version and account state.

Supported international networks listed in those instructions include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover and Diners Club International. A supported logo is not a promise that every card issued on that network will link.

Enter the card details requested on screen. These may include the card number, expiry date and security code. Use your own details, and enter any cardholder information as requested by your bank. Complete the issuer’s authentication if prompted. Official Ministry of Commerce guidance notes that linking requires issuer verification and directs users to the payment provider or issuing bank if it fails.

If Services or Wallet is missing, update the app and consult its help. Guangzhou’s official setup guide also describes Me → Settings → General → Tools → Weixin Pay → Enable. That is an alternative to look for, not a menu that every version must display.

3 Complete the identity checks shown

Read the payment service agreement and privacy notice before accepting. If the app requests identity information, select your actual document type and copy your name and document details carefully from that document. Passport verification can require uploading a passport copy, as described in the Guangzhou guide.

Do not try random spellings or another person’s identity if verification fails. Check the selected document type, passport number and names first, then contact official support with the error message. Submit identity documents only through the official verification process.

Finish any payment-security setup requested by the app. Keep your payment password and verification codes private. Before leaving home, make sure you can reopen Wallet and see the linked card. Once in China, try a small purchase you actually need at a staffed shop before relying on the app for a time-sensitive payment.

How to pay at a shop or restaurant

Weixin Pay supports both directions of QR payment, plus eligible merchant-app payments. TenPay Global’s payment guide illustrates the three methods.

Scan the merchant’s code

Open WeChat’s scanning function, commonly under the + button, and scan the merchant’s payment QR code. Check the recipient shown. Enter the bill amount if asked, choose your linked card if a payment-method selector appears, and review any fee before confirming. Check for a successful payment and let the merchant confirm receipt.

Some restaurant codes open a menu instead. In that case, order through the menu and follow its checkout flow; scanning the menu itself has not paid the bill.

Let the cashier scan your code

Open your payment code from the payment area and check the selected funding method. Show that live code to the cashier when you are ready to pay. Keep the screen under your control and check the amount charged afterward. Do not send a screenshot of your payment code to someone offering to test your account.

Pay inside a merchant app or mini program

Choose Weixin Pay at checkout where offered. Review the order, recipient, amount and available payment method. The fact that a service runs inside WeChat does not establish that its checkout accepts your particular foreign card.

Merchant payments are different from transfers

An international card linked for purchases should not be treated as a way to send money to friends or fund red packets. Weixin Pay’s international-card guide, hosted by Duke University, distinguishes everyday mainland purchases from unsupported international-card functions such as transfers and red packets. The International Card User Addendum also limits the card-only, not fully identity-verified setup to eligible purchases rather than wallet-balance functions.

If a QR code opens a personal transfer, ask whether the business has a merchant payment code or another payment method. Do not use a transfer to a friend as your test of whether shop payments work. Other wallet features have their own eligibility rules; passport verification alone is not a promise that every feature becomes available.

Fees and limits to check before paying

Shanghai’s September 2026 fee guidance gives the general foreign-card rules:

  • Payments of RMB 200 or less are generally exempt from the platform service fee.
  • Above RMB 200, a 3% fee may apply to the full transaction amount, not just the portion above RMB 200.

For example, a RMB 300 purchase with that fee would incur RMB 9 in platform fees. Check the actual payment screen rather than calculating from this example alone.

There is also a conditional promotion. In its 27 May 2026 announcement, Tencent described a 3% fee waiver for first-time international-card users: 90 consecutive calendar days from the first transaction, covering up to RMB 1,000 in spending per day. The announcement does not give a universal campaign closing date or resolve every eligibility case. Check the current offer and fee displayed in your account; do not assume a newly added card makes an existing user eligible.

Tencent’s verified-user guidance publishes higher limits for verified international users of up to US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 per year. These are published ceilings, not guaranteed limits for your account or card. Follow the amount permitted in your app, and check with your issuer before a large payment. Review your card’s own currency-conversion and overseas-transaction terms separately from Weixin Pay’s platform fee.

When setup or payment fails

  • No verification message: check the country code and whether the relevant phone number can receive texts. If your bank requires approval in its own app, check that too.
  • Card will not link: recheck the details, then ask the issuer whether it declined verification. A supported card network does not resolve an issuer rejection.
  • Card linked but payment unavailable: check whether the transaction is a merchant purchase, whether the card can be selected, and whether the app requests further verification.
  • Identity check rejected: retain the error wording and ask official support what needs correcting. Do not send your passport to an unofficial helper.
  • Unclear whether payment succeeded: check the transaction record and ask the merchant before paying again. A bank notification alone may not explain the final merchant-order status.

TenPay Global lists customer support at 95017 in mainland China and +86 571 95017 from overseas, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan. Have the error text, time and transaction reference ready. Never disclose a password or one-time code to someone who contacts you claiming to fix the problem.

Keep a backup for the first day

Carry some RMB cash and a physical card, and consider setting up a second payment app before travel. A second app can still fail if the underlying issue is your card or phone connection. See our Alipay setup guide and guide to paying in China as a tourist for the broader payment plan.
