Alipay for Foreigners: Set Up a Foreign Card and Pay in China

Quick answer

Official sources checked on 9 October 2026. This guide covers overseas-card merchant payments in mainland China; your account’s current prompts and payment terms take priority.

Foreign visitors can use Alipay with an eligible overseas credit or debit card without opening a mainland Chinese bank account. Start before departure: register, link your own card, complete the checks requested, then use Alipay’s Scan or payment-code function at eligible merchants. You do not need to load a prepaid tourist wallet to follow this route.

The important distinction is between paying a business and transferring money to a person. A card that works at a restaurant may be unavailable for a personal transfer. This guide walks through setup, checkout and the failures worth checking before you try again.

Have these ready before you start

  • Your phone and the official Alipay app from your normal app store.
  • A mobile number you control, including access to verification texts during the trip.
  • Your own eligible bank card, its billing details and your bank’s authentication method.
  • Your passport for any identity checks requested.
  • A separate way to pay, such as RMB cash and a physical card.

An overseas phone number is acceptable for registration, according to Shanghai’s September 2026 mobile-payment instructions. A Chinese SIM is therefore not a general prerequisite. If you buy a travel data plan, check separately how you will receive bank texts on your normal number. Our internet guide for China explains the connection choices.

Which foreign cards can you use?

Alipay supports major international card networks, but a network logo does not guarantee that every issuing bank or card product is eligible. Ant International’s card-linking announcement names Mastercard, Visa, JCB, Discover and Diners Club International.

American Express was added subsequently. The 25 February 2025 Alipay announcement specifically excludes American Express cards issued by third parties outside mainland China. If that describes your card, do not assume it is eligible simply because it carries the Amex logo; check the current app and issuer guidance.

Prepare a second card if you already have one, preferably with an independent issuer. There is no need to open a new financial account just to follow this guide. Ask your existing bank about overseas purchases, authentication and fees before travelling.

Set up Alipay in five steps

1. Register or sign in

Open Alipay and sign in to your existing account, or register using your country code and mobile number. Complete the verification shown. Choose English or the international interface if offered. Screen labels can vary by app version and account.

Keep access to the registration number. Changing phones or removing your usual SIM immediately before travel can make account recovery harder. Make sure you know how to unlock both Alipay and your bank’s app without relying on somebody else’s device.

2. Add your bank card

Go to Me → Bank Cards and choose the add-card option. Some versions also show Add Now on the homepage. Enter the requested card details and finish any issuer authentication.

American Express’s illustrated setup guide shows the homepage alternative and fields such as card number, expiry and security code. Follow the fields for your own card type rather than copying the example’s security-code format.

If linking fails, check the error before re-entering everything. A typing error, issuer rejection and unsupported card are different problems. Do not add another person’s card as a workaround.

3. Complete identity verification when requested

Use your real identity and select the appropriate document type. Copy your passport name and number carefully. If the app requests document images or a face check, complete them through its official verification flow; never send your passport to a stranger promising faster approval.

Alipay’s published international-card service agreement describes cardholder and identity checks and requires users to provide their own accurate information. Read the current agreement and privacy notice presented in your app. Do not assume an older screenshot gives the exact order or requirements for your account.

A request for more verification is a reason to follow the official instructions, not to keep changing your name or nationality until the form accepts something. If it rejects correct details, retain the error wording and contact support.

4. Check your payment method

Reopen the card section and confirm that the intended card appears. Locate the payment-code function so you can find it at a checkout. Complete any payment-security setup requested, and keep the password private.

A visible linked card confirms that you have added it. It does not establish that every purchase, merchant or extra service is supported. Do not use a transfer to a friend as a test of merchant payments.

5. Make a small, genuine purchase after arrival

At a staffed shop, try buying something you actually need. Review the recipient, amount and funding card, then confirm that both the app and merchant show success. This checks the practical combination of your phone connection, account, card and that merchant.

Avoid making your first attempt a large hotel deposit or a payment with a departure deadline. If it fails, use your backup and troubleshoot somewhere you can read the error calmly.

The two ways to pay at a counter

Scan the merchant’s QR code

Open Scan, point your camera at the business’s Alipay payment code, and check the recipient. Enter the bill amount if requested. Choose your card where a selector appears, review any fee and confirm. Wait for the result and ask the cashier to confirm receipt.

A restaurant QR code may open a menu instead of a payment screen. Finish ordering and follow its checkout process. Scanning the table code alone does not settle the bill.

Show your payment code

Open the payment-code function, often labelled Pay/Receive, and check the selected card. Let the cashier scan the live code when you are ready. Review the resulting charge.

Treat this code as payment access: do not send a screenshot to someone offering to test your account. A stored screenshot is also a poor substitute for opening the live payment function.

For a checkout inside a mini program, inspect the actual order and available funding method. Being inside Alipay does not automatically make every service eligible for your overseas card.

Merchant QR codes and personal transfers are different

The official Alipay+ visitor FAQ says linked international cards support daily mainland purchases, while person-to-person transfers and red packets are outside their supported scope. Adding a card does not turn it into a general-purpose balance-transfer facility.

If scanning a code opens a transfer to an individual, ask for the merchant payment option. If that is unavailable, use another agreed payment method. Do not pay an unfamiliar “helper” to load your account, and do not assume passport verification unlocks every wallet feature.

Fees, exchange rates and limits

Shanghai’s 21 September 2026 overseas-card guidance gives the general rule for linked overseas cards: payments of RMB 200 or less are generally exempt from the platform fee; payments above RMB 200 may incur 3% on the full amount. A RMB 300 purchase would therefore add RMB 9 if that fee applies.

Check the fee on your payment screen. Promotions can depend on the account, card and date; a WeChat Pay offer does not establish an Alipay exemption. No universal Alipay promotional waiver is assumed in this guide.

Your bank may impose separate overseas-transaction charges. Alipay’s visitor FAQ says the card network and issuer provide the exchange rate; check your card statement for the final home-currency charge.

Ant’s published visitor limits reach up to US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 annually. These are ceilings, not a promise of approval. Check the current limit in your account and your bank’s separate controls before a large bill.

Troubleshoot the specific failure

  • No text arrives: check the country code, selected phone number and its ability to receive messages. Bank authentication may happen in the bank app instead.
  • Card cannot be added: recheck the details and ask your issuer whether it declined verification.
  • Card disappears at checkout: check whether this is a supported merchant purchase or a transfer-style payment.
  • Payment status is unclear: inspect the transaction record and ask the merchant before paying again.
  • A refund is needed: ask the merchant to process it against the original order, retain the reference and check the status with the provider. Do not assume an immediate return to your card.

Alipay’s official visitor page lists support at +86 571 2688 6000, daily 08:00–24:00 China time. Use in-app support where available. Share the transaction reference and error, never your password or one-time code.
