How to Book China Train Tickets as a Foreigner

Quick answer

Reviewed against official railway and government sources on October 9, 2026.

Foreign visitors can book Chinese trains with a valid passport through China Railway's official 12306 website or app. The essential sequence is to prepare an account, complete the requested identity checks, choose the exact stations and train, pay, and confirm that the ticket has been issued. Carry the original passport used for the booking when you travel.

Start at the official 12306 English website. A search result, an unpaid order and a ticket are different stages. Keep going until the order shows successful purchase and the correct passenger and journey details.

Before opening the booking screen

Decide which two stations you need, not merely which two cities. Large cities can have several railway stations, and the fastest train may leave from a station farther from your hotel. Copy each station's full name and check its map location before comparing departure times.

Write a short booking brief for yourself:

  • Departure and arrival stations, including any direction such as South or North
  • Travel date and a realistic range of departure times
  • Passenger details exactly as shown on the documents being used
  • Preferred seat class and whether the group needs to sit together
  • The latest useful arrival time, allowing for the onward hotel transfer

Compare the complete journey. A train that arrives earlier at a distant station may save little time overall. For a transfer, check whether both services use the same station. An across-city station change should be planned as a separate trip with its own transport and buffer.

Step 1: Create the account before tickets become urgent

Use the official site or the Railway 12306 app obtained through its official links. Follow the registration screen for your document type, contact details and account verification. Keep access to the email address and phone number used during registration; changing them while traveling can complicate account recovery.

The wording and available verification methods can differ by platform version. Read the current prompts rather than following an old screenshot one tap at a time. If the app asks you to complete a security check, do it inside the official service. Do not send passwords or verification codes to a stranger offering to fix the account.

You can plan a journey before tickets are available for sale. Use the date selector and release information on 12306 to identify when your departure becomes bookable. A date outside the current sale window is not evidence that the train is sold out. Timetable adjustments may also affect which trains appear.

Step 2: Add and verify each passenger

Enter each traveler's name, nationality, passport number and other requested details carefully. Read the field instructions for names containing spaces, punctuation or multiple given names. Do not invent an abbreviation simply because it fits more easily.

The government's transport guidance for foreign visitors explains the verification routes: entering identity information online, uploading the passport information page for manual checking when required, or taking the valid passport to a station ticket office. Complete this ahead of a time-sensitive purchase.

Check every passenger's status separately. A working account does not mean all newly added travelers have passed the necessary checks. For a child, use the current booking instructions and applicable child-ticket category; do not assume the adult's completed profile automatically covers them.

If the passport has been renewed since an earlier journey, update the passenger details before buying. The document number on an old saved profile can be easy to overlook.

Step 3: Choose the train and review the order

Search your stations and date, then inspect the departure time, arrival time, journey duration and available seat categories. Check the arrival date on overnight services. Also check whether a result is direct or requires changing trains.

For each traveler, review the name and document number before submitting. China Railway's ticket-purchase guidance states that names cannot simply be changed after purchase; incorrect identity information can require a refund and a new booking, subject to the applicable rules.

Seat preferences should be treated as requests until the issued ticket confirms the allocation. If sitting together is important, inspect the final carriage and seat assignments. Do this while alternatives are still practical, rather than discovering separate carriages on the platform.

When a desired train is unavailable, compare a nearby departure time or another suitable station. Check the transfer cost before treating a farther station as a bargain. If the system offers a waitlist option, read its deadline and payment conditions; a waiting request is not a confirmed seat.

Step 4: Pay and confirm successful purchase

Complete payment within the time shown by the booking platform. Use one of the methods offered for your account and order. The government guidance lists Chinese and foreign bank cards and mobile payments among the available channels, but the live checkout determines what is usable for that transaction.

If payment fails, distinguish a bank decline from an expired booking or an unfinished verification step. Check the order status before submitting payment again. A bank notification alone may not establish that the railway has issued the ticket.

After a successful purchase, save the following in a place you can open offline:

  • Order reference and train number
  • Exact departure station, date and time
  • Arrival station and arrival date
  • Carriage, seat or berth details
  • Passenger names and a note identifying the passport used

Do not put full passport details in a shared travel chat unnecessarily. Each adult should have the journey information available without relying on the group leader's battery or mobile data. Our China payment guide covers wider payment preparation.

If online verification or booking fails

Start by recording the exact error message. Check whether it concerns your account, the passenger identity, seat availability or payment. Those problems require different solutions; repeatedly changing all the details at once makes troubleshooting harder.

For identity problems that cannot be resolved online, take the original passport to a staffed station ticket office. China Railway's current ticketing instructions describe station verification and document-photo verification for foreign-passport users. Allow time for the visit before your intended train.

For an immediate purchase, a station ticket counter is an established alternative. Bring the passport and show a written request with the date, station names, train number if known, passenger count and seat preference. Ask to review the journey before paying. A counter cannot create seats on a sold-out train, so have a second departure in mind.

The official 12306 contact page lists +86 12306. Use official help channels for railway questions. If you choose a separate booking company, check its charges, cancellation process and actual ticket-issuance status; no third-party booking service is endorsed in this guide.

On travel day: the passport matters more than a printout

Carry the original valid identity document used to buy the ticket. China Railway's English ticketing FAQ explains that an e-ticket itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a boarding credential.

Check the departure station again before leaving the hotel. Aim to arrive with enough time for the entrance, security screening, identity checks and the walk to the boarding gate. The appropriate margin depends on the station, holiday crowds, luggage and whether you need counter help; the departure time is not the time to reach the station door.

Look up your train number on the departure display. Follow the announced gate and boarding time, and ask staff for the manual or assisted check if your passport does not work at an automatic reader. Keep the passport available during the journey and at the exit.

Once aboard, match both carriage and seat. Store luggage without blocking doors or aisles. Prepare to leave before your arrival stop, especially if the train continues farther; do not assume your destination is its terminus.

Changes, cancellations and missed trains

Open the issued order and review the available change or refund action as soon as plans change. Read the proposed train, fare difference, fee and refund amount before confirming. Changes depend on available seats and the applicable rules, including how close you are to departure.

For ordinary mainland journeys, use China Railway's passenger-transport and ticketing rules. Hong Kong West Kowloon cross-border services have separate rules; do not apply a domestic fee summary to them.

If you miss a train, contact railway staff promptly and ask which change options remain. Do not board another service on the assumption that your original ticket is valid. Keep receipts and the original payment method accessible when requesting a refund.

Put the train into a workable itinerary

The booking is only one part of a transfer day. Save the destination hotel's Chinese address, check the route from the arrival station and avoid placing an inflexible sightseeing reservation immediately after a long journey. Our China travel checklist puts these preparations in order.

If you would like help comparing city sequences and transfer days, send ChinaGuideTrip your proposed route and dates. Train availability and any booking arrangements must be confirmed separately.
