Best eSIM for China: What to Check Before Buying

Quick answer

Factual review: 9 October 2026. Provider terms can change; check the exact package before paying.

The best eSIM for your China trip is one your phone can use, that covers your whole route, and whose data and activation rules fit your travel dates. Start with those checks before comparing prices. A cheap package is poor value if it expires halfway through your trip or cannot share data with your laptop.

For a short mainland visit, an international travel eSIM can be a convenient way to arrange mobile data before departure. It may not provide a Chinese phone number. If you need local calls or a +86 number, compare it with a mainland operator's service. Our internet guide explains the broader choice between an eSIM, home-carrier roaming, local SIM and Wi-Fi.

This is a buying and setup guide based on official documentation, not a hands-on speed test or a ranking of every provider.

1. Check your exact phone and carrier lock

Find your phone's model number and country of purchase. Compare both with the manufacturer's specifications and the eSIM seller's compatibility list. Similar-looking phones sold in different markets can have different SIM capabilities. Having a recent phone, or seeing another traveler use the same model name, is not enough.

On an iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for Carrier Lock. Apple says an unlocked device shows “No SIM Restrictions.” If it is locked, ask the carrier about unlocking before buying another provider's eSIM. Apple's international eSIM guidance also distinguishes travel eSIMs from local carrier plans.

China mainland carrier eSIM activation has its own device requirements. Do not read “eSIM supported in China” as a promise that a mainland operator can activate your overseas phone. Conversely, restrictions on mainland operator profiles do not mean every international travel eSIM is unusable. Check Apple's mainland-specific guidance, or your Android manufacturer's instructions, for your particular device.

Also check how many lines your phone can keep active together. You may want travel data and your home number for verification messages. Decide this before removing a physical SIM or turning off an existing line.

2. Match the package to every stop

Write down your itinerary as separate destinations: mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and any other countries. Read the coverage list rather than relying on a product called “China” or “Asia.” A mainland package may be unsuitable for your Hong Kong stop; a regional package may include places you do not need while omitting one you do.

Then check the named mobile network and any 4G or 5G conditions. A network logo identifies a partner, not the signal strength inside your hotel or along a mountain trail. For remote destinations, give support the actual places on your route and ask what coverage information they can supply. Keep essential addresses and directions offline even with a large data allowance.

3. Separate installation from the start of validity

An eSIM profile is the configuration installed on your phone. A data package has its own start and expiry rules. These are related, but buying, installing and beginning paid validity are not necessarily the same event.

Find answers to four questions:

  • Does the package start on installation, manual activation or connection to an eligible network?
  • Is there a deadline after purchase by which it must be activated?
  • How are days counted, and which time zone is used?
  • What happens if the trip is delayed or you briefly connect during a stopover?

Airalo's purchase guidance says purchase itself does not begin validity, but some eSIMs have use-by or recycling conditions. Read the package's additional information before installing. Save a copy of the terms and activation instructions while you have reliable internet.

Avoid buying months ahead simply because an offer is cheap. The activation deadline matters as much as the advertised number of travel days.

4. Compare usable data, hotspot and top-ups

Look at your phone's mobile-data history for a normal week. Navigation and messaging, video calls, photo backups and laptop tethering create very different demands. Download entertainment before departure and consider pausing large automatic uploads when using a limited package.

For fixed-data plans, check what happens at the limit: service may stop until you buy more. For “unlimited” plans, find the high-speed allowance, reduced speed and reset period. Do not assume unlimited means continuous full-speed video calls.

As one concrete example, the Airalo five-day unlimited China listing displayed a reduction to 1 Mbps after 3 GB of daily use when reviewed. That is a plan-specific condition, not a rule for all Airalo products. Recheck it in your selected package.

Hotspot support needs its own check. Confirm whether tethering is allowed, whether it has a separate cap and whether a tablet or laptop can consume the whole allowance. Also check whether a top-up extends time, adds data, starts immediately or waits for the existing package to finish.

Airalo and Nomad: useful differences to verify

These two official listings provide a starting point for comparison. There is no price winner here: currencies, promotions and package selections change, and the cheapest option depends on the dates and amount of data you need.

Airalo

The China listing identifies China Unicom as its primary network and offers fixed-data and unlimited options under data-only service. Check availability of top-ups for the selected package. Its hotspot instructions allow personal hotspot where the device and network support it, and explain that some setups require a hotspot APN matching the installation details. Confirm activation and fair-use conditions in the individual plan rather than transferring them from a different Airalo product.

Nomad

The Nomad China listing names China Unicom and China Telecom in its coverage information, with actual network availability dependent on the plan. It states that hotspot is supported. The page says activation must occur within 60 days of purchase, after which the plan automatically starts; it also warns that some eSIMs need manual activation. Use the instructions for your order. For a phone number, the page directs customers to individual plan details: do not assume a Chinese number is included. Remote-area coverage and speed are not guaranteed by a country-level listing.

Before choosing either provider, check its support channels and refund conditions, particularly for an incompatible phone, an already-installed profile or a changed departure date.

5. Know what data-only leaves out

A data connection lets supported internet apps communicate. It does not automatically give you ordinary phone calls, SMS or a mainland +86 number. If a booking service requires a particular type of number, ask about that requirement before choosing your package.

Keeping your home SIM active may help with bank or account verification, subject to your carrier's roaming arrangements. Confirm charges for calls and messages separately. Turning off data roaming on the home line does not make all use of that line free.

Likewise, a travel eSIM is not a blanket promise that every website will load. Mainland internet restrictions, service availability and provider routing can affect access. The UK government's China travel advice identifies restrictions affecting services including Google, Facebook, YouTube and X. Ask providers about specific requirements, follow applicable rules and have an alternative contact method.

Install before departure, then test on arrival

  1. Use a trusted internet connection and open the instructions for your exact purchase. Confirm that early installation will not start validity unexpectedly.
  2. Add the profile using the provider's app, QR code or manual details. If the QR code is on the phone being configured, use the supported in-app or manual method, or display it on another trusted screen.
  3. Label the lines clearly, for example Home and China Travel. Keep the order reference and support route available offline. Treat the activation QR code as private.
  4. At the destination, enable the travel line and select it for mobile data. Apply data-roaming and APN settings exactly as that provider instructs. Avoid unintended data switching to the home line.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a page, open navigation and send a message. Test hotspot separately if you need it. Check the provider's balance and expiry display.

If the eSIM has signal but no internet

First confirm that the travel eSIM is the selected data line and the package has started, has data left and covers your location. Then compare the roaming and APN settings with the order instructions. Restarting the phone or briefly using airplane mode can help it reconnect.

Do not delete the eSIM as a first troubleshooting step. Reinstallation may require support or a replacement profile. Record the error, phone model, location and relevant settings, and contact the seller through its official support channel. Avoid posting activation details publicly.

Finally, prepare the apps you will use in China before departure. If you would like help shaping the wider itinerary, send ChinaGuideTrip your cities and dates.
